Covering 4,500 square kilometres the Island has a population of around 4,000 people, many of whom are sheep, cereal and eucalyptus farmers, fishermen, tourism operators and providers, apiarists, grape growers, artists, writers, glassmakers, sculptors and retirees.
Kangaroo Island enjoys mild wet winters and dry summers. Tempered by the ocean, particularly on the coast, maximum summer temperatures rarely exceed 35 degrees and very cold nights are unusual. Average temperature maximums range from 13 to 15 degrees in August to 20 to 25 degrees in summer, with February being the hottest month. The wettest month is July.

Attractions - The Rookery at Christmas Cove Bed & Breakfast Penneshaw

There are about 1600 km of roads on the island. The major roads between Penneshaw, American River, Kingscote and Parndana are excellent and sealed, but minor roads are secondary and require reduced speed and care. Every itinerary should include a ranger-guided beach walk with the Seal Bay's unique colony of 500 Australian Sea Lions. Seal Bay is a 65-minute drive from Penneshaw on an excellent road. Take a night-time walk in the bush to see the island's many nocturnal animal species like wallabies, possums and bandicoots, and make a date to see the little penguins as they emerge from the sea at the end of the day to return to their nests in the sand hills and rock faces around Penneshaw. They are just outside the Rookery at Christmas Cove. Marvel at the extraordinary shapes of Remarkable Rocks, a cluster of huge weather-sculptured granite boulders created over 500 million years by wind, water and sea spray. Nearby at Admirals Arch, walk the boardwalk and see some of the 7,000+ New Zealand Sea Lions scamper on the rocks. It's quite delightful and amusing to watch their antics. Go walking on the excellent trails in Flinders Chase National Park or dive to one of the 50 recorded shipwrecks around the Kangaroo Island coast or join a guided tour of Kelly Hill Caves complete with stunning new fibre optic lighting. Quite spectacular. Try and also see the Little Sahara - Kangaroo Island is a pot pourri of delight whether it be flora or fauna. Self-driving touring is a popular option and hire cars are widely available but should be booked in advance. 4WD vehicles are not essential on the island but for a chance to explore the island's more remote attractions book a 4WD tour with an expert local guide. Fishing and water sports are popular and visitors can cast a line from a jetty or charter a deep-sea boat. The Rookery is familiar with top tour operators who can assist visitors with their requirements. Daily SeaLink tours also operate out of Penneshaw.

Transportation - The Rookery at Christmas Cove Bed & Breakfast Penneshaw

Seven times the size of Singapore, Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island, accessible from Adelaide by a 30 minute air journey or by a 45 minute ferry trip from Cape Jervis on the comfortable passenger/car SeaLink ferry. Cape Jervis is a pleasant 100-minute drive south of Adelaide through the pretty, rural Fleurieu Peninsula. Regular air and ferry departures are provided to and from the mainland.
